HOW GREAT THOU ART!
HOW GREAT THOU ART!
Nancy
I can’t hear this song without the tears flowing because I remember….
It was 1956. I had no money to attend college, so I wrote Mars Hill Baptist Junior College nestled in my beloved Great Smoky Mountains … told them I had no money, but wanted to attend college “On Faith.” I was accepted! By the time Fall Semester arrived, a man had contacted my pastor and asked if he knew of a young person who needed financial help in attending college. My pastor gave him my name. This dear man–whom I never got to meet–paid for my 1st year. He even thought to send money periodically, in case I wanted to purchase gifts for my friends.
But, I get ahead of myself.
During Orientation Week, we had a Freshman Banquet in the large Dining Hall. After dinner, the lights were lowered and a flood light focused on a huge globe of Planet Earth hanging from the ceiling. A majestic rendition of “How Great Thou Art” reverberated throughout the dimly lit Dining Hall while the “World” was the only visible focal point.
I rejoiced because I had taken a leap of faith and here I sat on Mars Hill Campus with my 1st year already paid for!
I knew first hand:
“O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art.”
Sadly, my benefactor died suddenly with a heart attack and I never got to thank him in person. By the time I graduated from Wake Forest University in 1961, I had experienced many demonstrations of “With God ALL things are possible!” Faith requires taking a first step … then a second step until we have reached our intended destination!
As I look back, I would exchange “going to college on faith” with absolutely no other way! I had experiences that taught me about a caring Mother/Father God that I could have learned in no other way. Thank you, Mother/Father God for the privilege of watching the Universe of Loving Beings open doors through which I walked to earn my Bachelor’s Degree. I eventually earned two Masters degrees and went on my 2nd Middle Eastern tour–all free of charge to me.
“O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art.”
